NORFOLK, Neb. – The No. 10 Northeast Community College women's soccer team picked up right where they left off on Thursday, defeating NJCAA DI Western Nebraska Community College, 2-1 at Veterans Memorial Park in Norfolk.
The Hawks (1-0), struck first when Sara Pedroza (Hastings, Neb.) found sister Naomi Pedroza (Hastings, Neb.) sprinting down the right side of the field to give Northeast an early advantage. The Cougars opened the second half with a goal in the 48th-minute, but the Hawks quickly answered when freshman Romeni Gurmendi (Boulder, Colo.) found the back of the net for her first goal in a Northeast uniform.
Each team traded an equal amount of shots in the match. Carolin Stahlmann (Ahrensburg, Germany) tallied four saves, while Meghan Colton (Norfolk, Neb.) had two shots.
The Hawks welcome Northeastern Junior College for an 11 a.m. match tomorrow in Norfolk.
