MASON CITY, Iowa – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team began postseason play Saturday in Mason City, Iowa in the Region 11-B Tournament Semifinals against North Iowa Area Community College. The Hawks dropped the matchup by a final score of 64-51 to officially conclude the 2023-24 season.
Northeast (13-17, 9-11 ICCAC) got ahead on the scoreboard early and led 33-25 before the end of the first half after Allison Richards (Pine Ridge, S.D.) splashed a 3-pointer. The Hawks trailed the Trojans 51-24 at halftime of the first meeting of the two squads in Mason City on January 27 but trailed just 34-33 at intermission Saturday. Richards contributed 17 points in the showdown to put the finishing touches on an incredible sophomore campaign for the guard. NIACC put together a 20-3 run to pull away from Northeast in the third quarter in what proved to be the difference to punch their ticket to the next round of the tournament.
STAT SHEET:
Allison Richards (Pine Ridge, S.D.): 17 PTS, 3 REB, 3 STL
Maikole Carlow (Pine Ridge, S.D.): 8 PTS, REB

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Svehla on the playoff showdown today:
"We had a solid first half and led for most of it, but NIACC hit some threes to take the lead into halftime," Svehla said. "We had some girls get in foul trouble, but we weathered through that pretty well. Our third quarter was a killer as we just struggled to score. I like how we battled. That is all a coach can ask for."
Svehla on the season coming to a close:
"We didn't have the year that we hope for, but I like how we brought a competitive spirit to the very end."
