NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team began their home slate Friday night as they welcomed Northeastern Junior College to the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk. The Hawks prevailed by a final score of 71-66 to move to 2-0 on the young season.
The Hawks (2-0) held an 18-16 advantage after the first quarter and took a 32-30 lead into the halftime locker room. Northeast was able to extend that edge to 51-46 after three quarters, and a big three pointer from Marta Pons (Sevilla, Spain) was enough to carry the Hawks to their second victory in as many games.
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head women's basketball coach Matt Svehla's overall thoughts on the contest:
"Games are always going to have runs," Svehla said. "Especially when both teams are letting threes fly. I liked the fact that we had more of a post presence than we did in our first game. I thought Sharissa Haas (Pine Ridge, S.D.) did a good job around the basket. Offensively, we made some timely baskets."
Svhela on his emphasis before Tuesday's game:
"We just have to keep getting better," Svehla said. "Really, our opponent is our opponent, but early in the season we need to worry about us. Some of it is just getting better at one-on-one defense. I thought we battled better going after some balls, so we can continue to get better in that area. Just continue to get better in all phases of the game."
UP NEXT:
Northeast will be back at home to battle Central Community College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
