ESTHERVILLE, Iowa – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team battled hard Tuesday night in Estherville, Iowa, but ultimately came up short in the final minutes to Iowa Lakes Community College, 59-54.
The Hawks (8-16, 5-9 ICCAC) looked to be following a similar script of what worked for them in last Saturday's win over Southeastern Community College, as they trailed by an almost identical margin at halftime as what they did just three nights ago.
The 35-28 deficit at the break was all but erased in the second half, as Ashley Hassett (Hershey, Neb.) completed an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:24 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the Hawks to within one point of the lead at 54-53. However, the Hawks couldn't buy a bucket the rest of the way.
Hassett lit up the scoreboard with 26 points and eight rebounds. Marta Pons (Sevilla, Spain) added 10 points and four rebounds, while Lorna Maxon (Laurel, Neb.) and Autumn Dickmander (Brule, Neb.) both contributed six points, respectively.
Making shots came with ease for the Hawks as they went 20-for-41 from field goal range and 12-for-14 from the free-throw line.
The Hawks won't have to wait long for another crack at the competition, as they take on Iowa Western Community College at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
