NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team gave the No. 2 ranked Kirkwood Community College Eagles all they could handle Saturday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk, before ultimately falling 68-45.
The Hawks (7-14, 4-7 ICCAC) were led in scoring in the ICCAC clash by Ashley Hassett (Hershey, Neb.), who totaled 18 points and seven rebounds. Hassett was also aggressive in reaching the free-throw line as she appeared at the charity stripe 15-different times. Lorna Maxon (Laurel, Neb.) added 11 points and Autumn Dickmander (Brule, Neb.) tallied 10 points in the contest. Jaydy Gonzalez (Denver, Colo.) stepped up when called upon as she contributed six points that all came from 3-pointers. Molly Davis (Yutan, Neb.) was active on the glass as she pulled down nine rebounds.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 15-6 lead in the first quarter and hung close with the nationally ranked Eagles for much of the day. Hassett tossed in a layup with 5:58 to play in the second quarter to increase the Hawks lead to 22-18. However, the Eagles would retake the lead and control much of the final two quarters.
Aggressiveness in firing the long ball was the name of the game for the Hawks as they shot 19 3-pointers in the matchup, making 42-percent of those shots.
The Hawks will load up the bus and hit the road for their next conference showdown against Des Moines Area Community College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Boone, Iowa.
