FORT DODGE, Iowa – Despite what could only be described as the comeback of the year, the Northeast Community College women's basketball team fell Wednesday night, 74-70 against Iowa Central Community College in ICCAC action in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
This matchup had a little bit of everything, as the Hawks (5-10, 2-3 ICCAC) were led in scoring by Ashley Hassett (Hershey, Neb.) with 20 points, even though she did not register a single first-half basket. Off the bench Destiny Epps (Philadelphia, Penn.) chipped in 14 points in 20 minutes, including shooting 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Lorna Maxon (Laurel, Neb.) added 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Entering the fourth quarter the Hawks trailed by 22 points, the largest that the deficit had been all game, but then the rally was on. After 17 fourth-quarter points from Hassett, the Hawks closed the gap and what was a 60-38 game, was suddenly 73-70 in the final seconds. The Tritons made a free throw to put the game out of reach at 74-70, but all who watched were treated with an absolute thriller.
Throughout the game, Northeast had a big advantage on the boards as they out-rebounded Iowa Central, 44-34.
The Hawks return home for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff on Saturday at the Cox Activities Center to square off with Ellsworth Community College.
