Second-half surge lifts Hawks to first win of the season
NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team battled from start to finish on Wednesday night to defeat Morningside University JV, 60-49 at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.

Leading by six points at halftime, the Hawks (1-0) went to work in the second half and outscored the Mustangs in the third quarter, 18-12. Ashley Hassett (Hershey, Neb.) hit a 3-pointer at the beginning of the second half, before Alexis Bliven (Holdrege, Neb.) hit a layup and Marta Pons (Sevilla, Spain) followed with a 3-pointer.
The Hawks managed a 13-point lead for most of the quarter, but not before Destiny Epps (Philadelphia, Penn.) sank a long-range 3-pointer to give Northeast a 14-point lead. Molly Davis (Yutan, Neb.) closed out the quarter with a 3-pointer of her own, off a crisp pass from Epps. Bliven took over in the fourth quarter as she filled the stat sheet, diving for loose balls and picking off Mustang passes. She went on to sink a 3-pointer with 6:21 to play in the game and another five minutes later to close out the game for the Hawks.
Hassett led the Hawks with 14 points and 19 rebounds. Bliven added 11 points, five boards, four steals and four assists. Davis had 10 points and four steals. The Hawks shot 33 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc.
The Hawks host Northeastern Junior College at 5 p.m. Saturday in Norfolk.
