CRESTON, Iowa – Trailing by two points with 3:04 to play in the game, the Northeast Community College women's basketball team couldn't find a spark to overcome Southwestern Community College, falling 60-53 in ICCAC play in Creston, Iowa.
The Hawks (9-6, 8-6 ICCAC) led by seven points after the first quarter, but were held to only nine points in the second quarter to trail by four points heading into halftime. Hannah Ollendick (Tilden, Neb.) brought the Hawks within a point after sinking a 3-pointer. Despite trailing by nine points early in the fourth quarter, the Hawks got back-to-back layups from Breanna Stouffer (David City, Neb.) and Taylor Peter (Chambers, Neb.) to pull within two points.
The Spartans wouldn't go down without a fight, but the Hawks made things interesting down the stretch. Stouffer was sent to the free-throw line and hit both free throws to give the Spartans a narrow 57-53 lead. The Hawks were forced to foul late in the game and couldn't rebound from the seven-point deficit.
Peter led the Hawks with 15 points and eight rebounds. Stouffer added 11 points and four assists, while Ollendick chipped in 11 points. Ashley Hassett (Hershey, Neb.) recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hawks are back on the road at 1 p.m. Saturday when they visit Southeastern Community College in Keokuk, Iowa.
