CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Northeast Community College softball team made the trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa Sunday for a showdown with No. 7 Kirkwood Community College. The Eagles got the better of the Hawks in both contests by final scores of 8-0 and 6-0.
Northeast (8-16, 0-10 ICCAC) struggled to get much going in Game 1 as Makynzie Loftus (Gillette, Wyo.) was the only batter in the in the Hawks lineup to record a hit in the ballgame. Emilee Spitz (Columbus, Neb.) was tabbed as the starting pitcher Northeast and the sophomore righty gave up just two hits and two earned runs during her outing.
Game 2 was more of the same for both sides as there were only eight hits combined in the duel after only seven between the pair in Game 1 in what was a very windy afternoon. Josie Knust (Plattsmouth, Neb.) tallied two of those hits during Sunday's twin bill, one in each of the two events.
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head softball coach Iris Woodhead on how the afternoon played out:
"Tough day in the wind," Woodhead said. "I thought the bats were there, we just had balls get hung up in the wind. Needed just one to fall and I think that would have opened the gates for us. We will look for our bats to come alive tomorrow."
Woodhead on what can be sharpened before the two matchups Monday:
"Thought the defense did fine, we had some nice plays in the infield," Woodhead said. "We need to control Kirkwood's baserunning better tomorrow. We gave away a lot of extra bases because we weren't looking for the next play."
UP NEXT:
The Hawks will end their road trip with two more battles with No. 7 Kirkwood Community College starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
