NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College softball team was unable to hang with the highly potent offense of Kirkwood Community College, falling 12-3 and 9-0 in ICCAC play on Sunday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk.
The Hawks (2-18, 0-2 ICCAC) hung tough for three innings until Kirkwood scored a combined seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Northeast tallied three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles recorded two more runs in the top of the seventh.
Sydney Kelley (Omaha, Neb.) and Maggie Berryman (Norfolk, Neb.) both went 1-for-3 with a home run.
Lindsey Anderson (Dunlap, Iowa) took the loss, throwing four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven earned runs off 14 hits and a strikeout.
Six runs in the top of the first inning put Kirkwood in the drivers seat for much of the second game. The Eagles added two runs in the third and another in fourth to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard.
Regan Reicks (Dunlap, Iowa) had the lone hit for the Hawks.
Madison McKewon (Springfield, Neb.) was dealt the loss after tossing five innings, allowing seven earned runs off eight hits, while striking out three batters and walking two.
The Hawks return to action against Des Moines Area Community College tomorrow at 2 p.m. for a conference doubleheader in Norfolk.
