MASON CITY, Iowa – Points were easy to come on Saturday, but defense was the key to victory as the Northeast Community College men's basketball team fell 100-86 at the hands of North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, Iowa.
The Hawks (4-14, 0-8 ICCAC) put up an outstanding fight in what was a tight ICCAC contest for most of the first thirty minutes. Several Hawks players had huge days, as Emaniel Alexandre (Nassau, Bahamas) backed up his incredible 34-point performance on Thursday with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Evan Decker (Omaha, Neb.) also recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jared Lopez (Lincoln, Neb.) added 19 points, Jaden Strachan (Nassau, Bahamas) contributed seven and Collin Storr (Nassau, Bahamas) chipped in seven more. Storr also finished the game with 10 rebounds.
At halftime the Hawks only trailed 41-40, and the lead traded hands for much of the second half. Two free throws from Alexandre gave the Hawks a 64-62 advantage with 12:54 to play in the game, but that was the final lead they would hold the rest of the way.
The Hawks will get to play in front of their home crowd again as they take on No. 15 Kirkwood Community College at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
