Taylor and Walker propel Hawks over Iowa Lakes

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College baseball team received timely hitting and stellar pitching on Sunday afternoon in ICCAC action.
The Hawks (17-11, 8-6 ICCAC) topped Iowa Lakes Community College 8-2 and 12-5 at Veterans Memorial Park in Norfolk, Neb.
Drew Smith (Elkhorn, Neb.) got right to work in the bottom of the second, smashing a two-run home run over the left-field fence to tie the game at two apiece.
The Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the fifth and exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the sixth, thanks to a triple by Tanner Hunt (Elkhorn, Neb.) and two hits and a double from Bryce Walker (Papillion, Neb.).
Christian Dumont (Bellevue, Neb.) added two hits, including a double and two RBI in the win.
Freshman hurler Cam Taylor (Bellevue, Neb.) paced the Hawks on the mound, tossing a complete-game four-hitter. The lefty gave up only two earned runs, while striking out seven batters and walking three.
In the final game of the afternoon, Northeast scored early to take a 6-0 lead after two innings. Iowa Lakes began to mount a small comeback in the top of the fifth, but the Hawks ultimately had the final say as they added six runs in the final two innings.
Walker added three hits and three RBI, while Jayden Sinju (Murray, Utah), Spencer Weber (Bennington, Neb.), Smith and Hunt all had a homer for the Hawks.
Lane Koetter (Grand Junction, Colo.) picked-up his first win of the season, throwing four and one-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs off four hits.
Northeast goes for the four-game sweep against Iowa Lakes at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Norfolk.
