NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College softball team was back at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park for the first time this month for an ICCAC showdown with Ellsworth Community College. The Hawks swept the day as they captured a 10-7 triumph in Game 1 and a 14-1 win in Game 2.
Jade Koch (Norfolk, Neb.) was on fire throughout the afternoon as she blasted a grand slam in Game 1 and hit another home run in Game 2. The Hawks (17-21, 2-12 ICCAC) were able to pick up their first two conference wins of the season in front of their home fans. On the mound, Josie Knust (Plattsmouth, Neb.) worked out of a bases-loaded jam masterfully in Game 1 to ensure the Hawks closed out the game while Emilee Spitz (Columbus, Neb.) held the Panthers to just one run in Game 2.
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH
Head softball coach Iris Woodhead's thoughts on her team claiming their first ICCAC wins of the season:
"It was good," Woodhead said. "It was kind of what the girls needed. We've been talking about our opportunities to continue to be successful in the last half of our season. This was a good start. Snaps a 12-game losing streak. A lot of times it's tough to come back from that. We were a little slow the first game, but the second game we got back to our same old approach, which was good to see."
Woodhead's thought on Emilee Spitz's wonderful day on the mound:
"After DMACC she came in and we had some talks about changing her approach a little bit," Woodhead said. "She did an awesome job of changing her approach, changing her attitude, changing her mentality and we saw the success from it today."
Woodhead's thoughts as to how to carry this momentum into tomorrow's doubleheader:
"If we come out with the same type of enthusiasm and energy it should be a good day for us," Woodhead said. "If we come out with the same approach, I think we'll see another successful day."
