MCPHERSON, Kan. – The Northeast Community College baseball team continued its winning ways on Monday and Tuesday, sweeping McPherson College JV in McPherson, Kan.
On Monday, the Hawks (6-1) captured two wins, 11-1 and 18-8, while securing a 14-3 victory on Tuesday in the three-game series.
The Hawks jumped out an early 7-1 lead in Game 1 on Monday and only allowed a hit, thanks to a dominant pitching performance by the Northeast pitching staff.
Taylor Gill (Orem, Utah) went 4-for-5 with two runs, a triple and two RBI. Cooper Whitt (Knoxville, Tenn.) added two doubles, while Connor Jeffers was 2-for-2 with a run, a double and an RBI. Houston Fogelstrom (Omaha, Neb.) notched two hits and three stolen bases. Preston Tenney (Parker, Colo.) secured the win, tossing two innings, while allowing an earned run off no hits and striking out five batters.
Gill continued his strong start at the plate in Game 2, going 4-for-6 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Darius Hagen (Omaha, Neb.) added two doubles and five RBI, while Rusty Wortman (Gretna, Neb.) went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBI and two runs. Kaden Young (Columbus, Neb.) also added three hits, including a double and three runs. Chris Mazzini (Parker, Colo.) was the winning pitcher of record, throwing two innings, allowing four earned runs off two hits, while walking five and striking out two.
In the series finale on Tuesday, the Hawks tallied six runs in the top of the fourth to put the lead out of reach for McPherson JV. Gill went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, four RBI and three runs. Maximo De Leon (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) had two doubles and two runs, while Parker Dorrance (Arvada, Colo.) notched two hits and two runs. Clay Beaumont (Tekamah, Neb.) struck out seven and allowed just a hit in two and two-thirds innings of work to grab his second win of the season.
The Hawks hit the road for a weekend doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday when they square off with Neosho County Community College. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday in Chanute, Kan.
