Northeast baseball opens season in Kansas
CHANUTE, Kan. – The Northeast Community College baseball team opened the 2021 season on Saturday, falling to Neosho County Community College in a doubleheader, 12-5 and 4-0 in Chanute, Kan.

CHANUTE, Kan. – The Northeast Community College baseball team opened the 2021 season on Saturday, falling to Neosho County Community College in a doubleheader, 12-5 and 4-0 in Chanute, Kan.
The Hawks (0-2) took the first lead in the first game of the doubleheader, but it didn't last long as the Panthers tallied three runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. The Hawks managed to score two runs in the top of the third when Colin Lynam (Springfield, Neb.) advanced home on an error by the second baseman. Samuel Manwarren (Overland Park, Kan.) singled to left field to score Tyler Monroe (Lincoln, Neb.) that brought the Hawks within three runs.
The Panthers added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hawks wouldn't go down without a fight as they scored two runs in the top of the fifth. However, Neosho responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning that put the game out of reach for the Hawks.
Manwarren went 3-for-4 with three RBI, a home run and a run. Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill.) added two hits, while Monroe went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
Nate Zyzda (Sioux City, Iowa) was tagged with the loss, after tossing three innings, allowing six earned runs off six hits. He struck out four batters and walked three.
The Hawks fell behind early in the second game of the doubleheader and couldn't score a run when it needed to the most.
Preston Tenney (Parker, Colo.) pitched a solid five innings for the Hawks, allowing only two earned runs off three hits, while striking out eight batters and walking one.
Lynam went 2-for-3 with a double, while Manwarren added two hits.
The Hawks return to the diamond against Neosho for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. in Chanute.
