NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College softball team wrapped up their series with No. 20 North Iowa Area Community College Saturday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk. The Trojans topped the Hawks in Game 1 by a final score of 10-1 and grabbed an 8-0 victory in Game 2.
Northeast (10-22, 0-16 ICCAC) celebrated sophomores Abby Balfour (Nebraska City, Neb.), Makynzie Loftus (Gillete, Wyo.), Morgan Kleinschmit (Wausa, Neb.), Alexis Folks (Arvada, Colo.), Emilee Spitz (Columbus, Neb.), Nikki Peters (Broken Bow, Neb.), Ellie Schwede (Norfolk, Neb.), Josie Knust (Plattsmouth, Neb.), Alyssa Bottorff (Nebraska City, Neb.) and Mia Eickhoff (Redondo Beach, Calif.) before Game 1 as part of Sophomore Day.
The Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in Game 1 in the bottom of the first inning when Taylor Schmidt (Norfolk, Neb.) scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, that run would be the last one that Northeast would push across on the afternoon as the pitching from NIACC was dominant.
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head softball coach Iris Woodhead on the action today:
"I thought we had a good, positive Sophomore Day," Woodhead said. "Things didn't go the way that we wanted them to, but the players had fun. It was a memorable day for our sophomores. Good weather, we had a positive attitude and the players had fun in the dugout. Can't go wrong with that."
Woodhead on what the focus will be before the Hawks take the field again:
"We will come back on Monday, have some practice and hit some balls," Woodhead said. "We hit so well against Southeast and we saw different pitching today. We have to do a better job of making adjustments at the plate."
UP NEXT:
Northeast will battle Cloud County Community College for the third and fourth time this season in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk.
