WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Northeast Community College softball team came close to knocking off Southeastern Community College on Saturday, falling in an ICCAC doubleheader, 5-3 and 5-1. The Hawks (10-44, 4-38 ICCAC) lost two one-run games on Sunday, 3-2 and 6-5 in West Burlington, Iowa.
In Game 1 on Saturday the Hawks took a 3-1 lead after three innings, but couldn't capitalize as the Blackhawks managed to add three runs in the bottom of the fifth and an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Brianna Aguilera (Pierce, Neb.) went 3-for-4 with a run, while Taylor Nicolay (Nebraska City, Neb.) went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Kierra Stewart (Dodge, Neb.) was dealt the loss, tossing six innings, allowing two earned runs off nine hits. She struck out three batters and walked one.
Southeastern kept the Hawks in check for much of Game 2, allowing only a run in the top of the seventh.
Aguilera had three hits and an RBI, while Alyssa Turner (Columbus, Neb.) went 2-for-4. Greta Lindberg (Tekamah, Neb.) took the loss in the pitcher's circle. She allowed two earned runs off four hits in five and two-thirds innings of work.
Two runs in the top of the seventh in Game 1 on Sunday, nearly gave the Hawks a come-from-behind victory. However, the Blackhawks scored early in the game to fend off the Hawks.
Nicolay, Lindberg and Jade Koch (Norfolk, Neb.) each had a hit, while Nicolay tallied a double and Lindberg had a home run. Stewart was the losing pitcher after giving up an earned run off three hits in six innings.
In the finale, the Hawks tied the game at 3-3 after three innings, but two runs in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference for Southeastern.
Aguilera went 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI. Chantel Julian (Roseville, Calif.) and Nicolay each had a home run. Alondra Martinez (Grand Island, Neb.) was tagged with the loss after throwing one and two-thirds innings. She allowed an earned run off two hits.
The Hawks host Des Moines Area Community College for their final regular-season doubleheader at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk.
