CRESTON, Iowa – The Northeast Community College women's volleyball team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday night, cruising past Southwestern Community College (25-17, 27-25, 23-25 and 25-15) in four sets in Creston, Iowa.
The Hawks (10-6, 4-0 ICCAC) made quick work in the first and second sets, but were unable to put the game out of reach in the third set after the Trojans answered with six-straight points to force a fourth set.
In the fourth, Elley Beaver (Columbus, Neb.) went to work for the Hawks after putting away two quick kills to give Northeast an early 11-5 advantage. A stout defensive effort in the fourth proved to be the difference as the Hawks kept Southwestern under 15 points to grab their fourth conference win.
"Tonight we really struggled mentally, but were able to come out with another conference win," head coach Amanda Schultze said. "Southwestern did a nice job at keeping us out of system and from there everything else seemed to be off and we just could not get into rhythm. We need to get mentally focused for another big game Friday."
Beaver and Kalli Brester (Howells, Neb.) led the offensive attack with 14 kills. Brester also added two blocks and 12 digs. Gabriela Barbosa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) recorded 24 digs and Savannah Nelson (Wakefield, Neb.) tallied 44 assists.
The Hawks welcome Central Community College for a non-conference showdown at 7 p.m. Friday at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
