NORFOLK, Neb. – After a hard-fought first set, the Northeast Community College women's volleyball team picked up its seventh-straight victory on Wednesday night, topping Des Moines Area Community College in straight sets (25-23, 25-17 and 25-15) at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk.
Down by seven points in the first set, the Hawks (8-3, 3-0 ICCAC) rallied back after a few miscues from DMACC. The momentum ultimately carried the Hawks in the final two sets, keeping the Bears offense out of rhythm.
"Tonight we got off to another slow start and found ourselves down seven points at one time," head coach Amanda Schultze said. "A switch went off and we were able to come back and win that first set, 25-23. The energy continued into the second and third set and we finally picked up our play and worked hard defensively. The girls did a great job tonight and I am very proud of them."
Reigning ICCAC Offensive Player of the Week Hannah Heppner (Stanton, Neb.) recorded 12 kills. Kalli Brester (Howells, Neb.) added nine kills, while Elley Beaver (Columbus, Neb.) tallied seven.
Setter Savannah Nelson (Wakefield, Neb.) had 32 assists and Gabriela Barbosa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) pitched in 28 digs.
The Hawks hit the road as they compete in the Pizza Hut Invitational, taking on Laramie County Community College at 1 p.m. and Casper College at 7 p.m. Friday in Sterling, Colo.
