WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa – Despite a sluggish start, the Northeast Community College volleyball team held off Southeastern Community College in straight sets (25-23, 25-22 and 25-19) to earn their first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday night in West Burlington, Iowa.
"Tonight we got off to a very slow start and barely came out on top in the first set," Hawks Volleyball Coach Amanda Schultze said. "Defensively, we struggled and did not do a good job at digging the ball or blocking until the last set. It is always tough to play on the road for the first conference game, but I am happy we came away with a win."
Kalli Brester (Howells, Neb.) led the Hawks in kills with 10, while Caitlin Orton (Mills, Neb.) added eight to go along with five blocks. Savannah Nelson (Wakefield, Neb.) chipped in 25 assists, nine digs and two blocks in the victory.
The Hawks hit the court as they host the Northeast Nebraska Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Northeast battles Lake Region State College at 5 p.m. Friday in the Cox Activities Center, followed by a match with Fort Scott Community College at 7 p.m. The Hawks conclude tournament play on Saturday, squaring off with Southeast Community College at 1 p.m.
