BURLINGTON, Iowa – The Northeast Community College women's soccer team was clicking on all cylinders on Saturday, topping Southeastern Community College 6-1 at Bracewell Stadium in Burlington, Iowa.
Six goals in the second period sparked an offensive attack for the Hawks (6-4-1, 6-1 ICCAC), led by freshman Madi McKewon. McKewon scored in the 78th and 81st minute, respectively.
"In the second half, our intensity really picked up after Kyla Ryan scored early from a great ball from Mary Perez," head coach Chad Miller said. "That seemed to spark something that got us going. Our intensity was good and we were winning balls quickly which was keeping us on our offensive half of the field. After Amanda's goal, it seemed like we found some space that we could attack and kept going after it. We have a tendency to slow play in games, but in the second half, we really picked up the speed and created a great attack as a team."
The scoring started in the 54th minute when Perez found Ryan for the first goal of the game. Minutes later, Amanda Stricker found the back of the net off an assist from Ryan. The scoring didn't stop there for the Hawks as Ellie Gess punched in a goal in the 66th minute.
After the two goals from McKewon, Elizabeth McCalla sealed the victory for the Hawks in the 86th minute, thanks to an assist from Aspen Sharp.
The Hawks outshot the Blackhawks 14-6.
Northeast continues conference action, battling Iowa Western Community College at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Veteran's Memorial Field in Norfolk.
