WEIDERIN’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE ON OPENING NIGHT PROPELS NORTHEAST OVER MIDLAND JV

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women's basketball team hosted their season opener Monday night at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk against Midland University JV. The Hawks took a commanding victory by a final score of 92-45.

Northeast (1-0) was led by Mia Wiederin (Norfolk, Neb.) in scoring as the freshman recorded a double-double during her first showdown in a Hawks uniform with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Aaliyah Jones (Rapid City, S.D.) added 25 points in her Northeast debut while Vilique Fallis (Rapid City, S.D.) put in 17 points of her own. The Hawks jumped out to a 26-point lead early in the first quarter and were able to hold that margin to begin the season in the win column.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Matt Svehla on the big win on opening night:

"Well, you always hope that you get off to a solid start and we did that tonight," Svehla said. "We played with good energy in that first quarter and our defense helped us offensively."

Svehla on building on the momentum from the victory over Midland into two more contests this week:

"This is a busy week with three games," Svehla said. "Wednesday night on the road at Southeast Community College will be a challenge and then an always strong Cloud County team coming to Norfolk on Saturday. It will be important to have a good week of practice."

UP NEXT:

The Hawks will hit the road for the first time this season and will take on Southeast Community College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Lincoln, Nebraska.
