Full team effort lifts Northeast women over Marshalltown; Svehla notches win No. 600

The Hawks led by 20 points at halftime and went on to defeat the Tigers 78-48 in ICCAC play. With the win, head coach Matt Svehla recorded his 600th-career victory with an overall coaching record of 600-189.
Northeast led from start to finish, holding the Tigers to only nine points after the first quarter. The Hawks held Marshalltown to 10 points in the second, 17 in the third and 12 in the fourth.
Irene Sanz (Vilassar de Mar, Spain) tallied 10 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists. Jade Blackburn (Surrey, England) had 10 points, six boards and three assists. Freshman Caitlin Orton (Mills, Neb.) added 10 points and seven rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting from the field in 14 minutes of action, while Teagan Pompa (Elgin, Ill.) had nine points. Kyla Moore (Norfolk, Neb.) pitched in nine points, six rebounds and five steals.
The Hawks shot 53 percent from the field, while holding the Tigers to 33 percent.
Northeast (15-10, 2-2) is back in action on Wednesday night, taking on Marshalltown in the Region XI tournament at 5 p.m. at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk. Admission for the game is six dollars for adults and four dollars for children. Northeast students get in for free.
