NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College softball team welcomed No. 20 North Iowa Area Community College to Ta-Ha-Zouka Park Friday for a doubleheader. The Trojans took Game 1 by a final score of 8-3 and also prevailed 13-1 in Game 2.
The Hawks (10-20, 0-14 ICCAC) were right with the Trojans in Game 1 but saw the Trojans inch away in the closing stages. Game 2 was a tough one for Northeast, but the Hawks will have a chance to turn things around tomorrow.
Northeast will honor sophomores Abby Balfour (Nebraska City, Neb.), Makynzie Loftus (Gillete, Wyo.), Morgan Kleinschmit (Wausa, Neb.), Alexis Folks (Arvada, Colo.), Emilee Spitz (Columbus, Neb.), Nikki Peters (Broken Bow, Neb.), Ellie Schwede (Norfolk, Neb.), Josie Knust (Plattsmouth, Neb.), Alyssa Bottorff (Nebraska City, Neb.) and Mia Eickhoff (Redondo Beach, Calif.) at 12:30 tomorrow before the series concludes.
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head softball coach Iris Woodhead's summation of the afternoon:
"We have to be better on the basepaths," Woodhead said. "We had opportunities to score more runs. We have to set ourselves up better to score from second base. If we do a better job of taking advantage on the bases, I think it's a different story. That's the nice thing about playing a four-game set. It doesn't matter what happened the day before. You can come back and make your own storyline the second day."
Woodhead on Sophomore Day taking place tomorrow:
"We have a lot of sophomores," Woodhead said. "We have been through a lot of trials together. Especially this group of sophomores. We have been tough on them. More tough than I think we have been with other sophomore groups. We had a good season last year. We are going to be sad to see them go. It's a great group of sophomores. They are a fun group to be around."
UP NEXT:
The Hawks will close their series with No. 20 North Iowa Area Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk.
