NORTHEAST MEN’S SOCCER SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE AGAINST NO. 1 PHOENIX

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Region XI Champions and Plains District Champions Northeast Community College men's soccer team played in Game 3 of Pool A at the 2022 NJCAA DII Men's Soccer National Tournament Wednesday morning in Tucson, Arizona against Phoenix Community College. The Bears topped the Hawks by a final score of 1-0 to move to the next round.

The Hawks (20-5) battled to the bitter end with Phoenix in what was a defensive battle throughout. The No. 1 Bears got on the board halfway through the first half, but Northeast did not go down quietly.

There were a few solid chances, but the Hawks struggled to generate enough of a push to even up the scoreboard. Even in the final minutes the Hawks pulled goalkeeper Reagan Maliska (Glasgow, Scotland) in a last-second effort to go for the win in what was an exciting close to the game.

A historic season for the Hawks has come to an end, but the team that broke almost every record that the men's soccer program had ever held will be remembered in the history books forever.

Assistant men's soccer coach Jyson Breitbarth on today's match:

"We fought until the last second and sometimes that says more about a team than just a win," Breitbarth said. "I saw men getting on each other's case to fight harder and dig deeper. That just shows how much this group was bought in to each other and how much they truly wanted it. We showed that we are more than just a team and that we are truly a family. I couldn't ask for anything else from this group of men."

Breitbarth on how he will remember this squad:

"I will remember this group as the ones who laid the foundation to set up the men's soccer program to be a powerhouse despite the countless amounts of adversity faced throughout the whole process."
