NORFOLK, Neb. – As the clock began to dwindle with the score tied at one, Victor Galterio knew he needed to score.
The sophomore from Pedreira, Sao Paula, Brazil blitzed through defenders and found an opening from 18-yards out, sending the ball to the back of the net. The goal proved to be the difference for the Northeast Community College men's soccer team (3-6, 2-3 ICCAC) as they picked up their second conference win over Dakota County Technical College at Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk.
It wasn't easy for the Hawks, down by a goal heading into halftime. But, it was Galterio putting the Hawks on the board in the 68th minute to tie the game at one apiece. The Northeast defense held strong for the rest of the period, allowing Galterio to put the game away for good.
"Our guys have played from behind most of the season up to this point and today was the same," head coach Chad Miller said. "One major growth I have seen from this team is keeping our focus in the game and keep working for that break through. We gave up an early goal so we were tested today."
Felipe Guilherme finished with four shots, while Galterio had three. Goalie Massimiliano Simonazzi had three saves in the net.
"Victor did an amazing job today taking advantage of open gaps and finding the net," Miller added. "I think he took the team on his shoulders today and the team was happy to go along for the ride."
The Hawks are back in conference action on Wednesday, traveling to Hawkeye Community College for a 4 p.m. match in Waterloo, Iowa.
