NORFOLK, Neb. – Local standout Matthew Schaefer (Fordyce, Neb.) recently signed a letter of intent to continue his academic and athletic careers at South Dakota State University, it was recently announced by head coach Kurt Pytleski.
In one year at Northeast, Schaefer broke six individual records, while shooting an average score of 75. The former 2018 and 2017 All-State golfer in high school competed in five tournaments this fall, taking home a first-place finish at the Midland Fall Invite while finishing in the top-10 on four different occasions.
"His golf game is awesome," Pytleski said. "He plays a good game of golf, but he works very hard at it. He is a great kid and a great student. He is good to work with and spends numerous hours in the golf simulator. He is always willing to help other guys. We will certainly miss him, but wish him the best of luck."
Located in Brookings, S.D., South Dakota State is an NCAA DI institution that competes in The Summit League. The head coach of the Jackrabbits is Casey VanDamme.
